Financial Management for Nonprofit Museums & Visual Arts Organizations
Arts FMS provides outsourced financial management for nonprofit museums and visual arts organizations across the United States, including museums, exhibition spaces, artist-centered organizations, public art organizations, and multidisciplinary visual arts nonprofits. With deep experience in nonprofit arts finance and a client roster spanning museums, exhibition spaces, and visual and literary arts organizations, Arts FMS provides the financial structure and support organizations need to focus on artists, exhibitions, audiences, collections, and mission.
Why Nonprofit Museums & Visual Arts Organizations Work With Arts FMS
Nonprofit museums and visual arts organizations often manage financial activity across exhibitions, collections, commissions, public programs, publications, artist payments, education initiatives, fundraising, and day-to-day institutional operations. Each area can carry its own budget, funding restrictions, vendor relationships, and reporting requirements, while still needing to roll up into a clear organization-wide financial picture.
Museums and visual arts nonprofits often depend on a mix of foundation grants, government funding, individual giving, memberships, sponsorships, program revenue, events, publications, admissions, and other earned income. Restricted funding can be tied to specific exhibitions, artists, programs, acquisitions, capital needs, or time periods, making accurate fund tracking and grant reporting essential. For organizations that operate museums, galleries, or other physical spaces, facilities costs and long-term planning add another layer of complexity.
For museums and collecting organizations, inventory, acquisitions, collections-related activity, and other institution-specific accounting needs can create additional demands. Across the field, strong financial systems help leadership understand not just whether an individual exhibition or project is on budget, but how programs, collections activity, and institutional operations contribute to the organization's long-term fiscal health.
Our Team
Arts FMS's team brings nonprofit financial and administrative experience from visual arts organizations, arts councils, and artist-service organizations. Lead Finance Consultant Saredt Franco previously led financial operations at Printed Matter and the Brooklyn Arts Council, supporting exhibitions, regranting programs, arts education, and community initiatives. Other team members have worked with organizations including Oklahoma Contemporary Arts Center, the New York Foundation for the Arts, and Amazement Square Children's Museum, alongside extensive experience serving arts and cultural nonprofits more broadly.
Arts FMS also currently works with museum and visual arts clients including The American LGBTQ+ Museum, Art21, Artists Space, Creative Time, The Drawing Center, Leslie-Lohman Museum of Art, Poster House, SculptureCenter, Socrates Sculpture Park, Swiss Institute, and many others.
Many museums and visual arts organizations operate with relatively lean administrative teams even while managing substantial grant portfolios, ambitious exhibition schedules, public programs, artists and vendors, collections or facilities needs, and complex reporting requirements. Arts FMS's integrated model can provide the depth of a larger finance department without requiring the organization to build each function internally.
Rather than relying on separate bookkeeping, accounting, reporting, and planning resources, a museum or visual arts organization working with Arts FMS gains a team that can connect those functions — helping staff and board move from accurate day-to-day accounting to stronger budgeting, forecasting, reporting, and long-term financial decision-making.
Full-Service Financial Management for Nonprofit Museums & Visual Arts Organizations
